Harvest flat broad bean pods for dinner, eat the fresh shelled beans or dry beans later in the season. Watch them take off and cover any trellis you might attempt to contain them as they have a zest for life that inspires. The red and red and white flowers attract hummingbirds. I love to plant these out my kitchen window for the show. Be sure to leave some pods to dry down as they are so fun to shell. I grow these to thresh in groups of children I work with because their beauty always makes kids gasp and smile. Transplant or direct seed these large runner beans in warm soil.
