This is an intentially genetically diverse winter squash mix that came from my friend Katie in Pt. Townsend. The initial cross was with Oregon Sweet Meat, Kabocha, Lower Salmon River, and Red Kuri. The resulting generations are variable in color, shape, and size but they are all beautiful taste delicious. The farming and plant breeding world prioritizes uniformity over diversity in most crops. While I understand this focus, I also want to remember and remind that diversity yields beauty, disease resistance, climate resilience and a gentic repository for future plant breeders.
